Dry Hopping Rate Calculator
Total dry hops from a rate in g/L or oz/gal, for any batch size.

How it works
Total dry-hop weight is simply the rate multiplied by the batch volume. Rates are normalised to grams per litre internally; an oz/gal rate is converted with 1 oz = 28.35 g and 1 gal = 3.785 L.
total = rate (g/L) × volume (L)
typical rates 2–8 g/L (~0.25–1 oz/gal)

Heavy charges absorb beer and increase loss to the hops - expect lower package volume at high rates.
Frequently asked questions
- How much dry hops should I use?
- Typical dry-hop rates run 2–8 g/L (about 0.25–1 oz/gal). A modest pale ale might use 2–3 g/L, while a hazy or West Coast IPA can push 6–8 g/L or more.
- How do I convert oz/gal to g/L?
- One ounce is 28.35 g and one US gallon is 3.785 L, so 1 oz/gal ≈ 7.49 g/L. This calculator handles the conversion when you pick oz/gal as the rate unit.
- Does dry hopping add bitterness?
- Very little. Dry hopping adds aroma and flavour without boiling, so it contributes negligible IBU. Use a boil or whirlpool addition if you want measurable bitterness.
